Home Based Business – You Work It But Who Owns It?

May 2, 2010 by Brian Lett · Leave a Comment

Every home based business owner is enamored by the idea of owning their own business. The downside is that while it may become apparent that their name is on the door, and they are accountable for every legal aspect of the business, they may not be the actual owner. Whether you have accepted a business offer from an online customer, bought into a franchise, or accepted investments from friends or relatives, the ownership of your home based business may not be as clear as you may think.

Yes, it is true that essentially every single opportunity which promotes the operation of a home based business to its members, portrays the notion that its agents will become business owners by becoming involved with the parent company. The unfortunate thing is that many arrangements give you the title of business owner, but the authority of a distributor. Therefore, you are forced to work within the confines of the business model of the parent company, selling only their products, at prices which they have determined, earning what they have told you that you will earn.

As negative as this may read, it is not to say that such home based businesses are necessarily a bad thing. Rather, I am simply pointing out that many people who join these companies fool themselves into believing they are business owners, when they are really distributors. As a distributor, you will not be able to make any changes on the website. Further, you will not be able to sell anything that is not from the main company, and in a majority of these businesses, you will not be allowed to even remotely adjust pricing. The only thing you can control, is how much money you spend on marketing this new distribution venture.

Having said this, I do firmly believe that a franchise actually provides the entrepreneur with a good business model, due to the immediate credibility which it provides. This is the case irrespective of whether you invest in a brick and mortar franchise, or a franchise. Both businesses mirror one another. The franchisee will incur fees in exchange for name recognition and national advertising. Products for the business must only be purchased from predetermined, authorized vendors. Of course, you will be listed as the owner of the franchise, but not the business.

You must know all of the facts surrounding your endeavor prior to concluding that you are, or will be the owner of a home based business. If you have the desire to operate without the restrictions of a parent company, knowing this fact will be of the utmost importance.

The advent of the Home Based Business has given Internet marketers great Business Opportunities. Unfortunately, some entrepreneurs do not really own their businesses. Drop by and visit usat SOSComplete.com
